The world ruled by the alternative self, the ego, is determined by fears, aversions, and desires. This self-alienation necessitates a system in which the ego can be preserved without immediately ending in self-destruction: today’s society , with its laws, banks, politicians, philosophies, religions, and science. They all attempt miserably to compensate for the loss of their own self and, in a variety of ways, to rediscover the primal source of life. These are attempts to return to the paradise from which they had banished themselves. What is overlooked is that although they no longer appear to live in paradise, it nevertheless continues to exist. Access to it has simply been forgotten. The transition from this “old world” to the new world is currently taking place; dying systems are collapsing, and everywhere people are achieving self-knowledge, also known as enlightenment, with increasing ease.
